Mission Oaks Senior Living May 2021 News Bulletin
Memorial Day is celebrated on May 31st.
Don’t forget to salute a vet for their service to this great country of ours. Throughout history, American soldiers have proudly defended freedom, the very principle which this country was founded upon. Also thank the spouses and family members of veterans as they have also sacrificed time lost with loved ones who were away protecting our values, our country, and the freedoms we take for granted.
You will find at Mission Oaks a photographic display of our veterans on “The Wall of Honor”. The Wall of Honor is located in the corridor outside the activity room in the assisted living building and in the corridor prior to entering the community room in the memory care building. Many of the photographs date from WWII and I must add, “there is something about a man in a uniform!”
Extend your best wishes to our residents born in May:
Elizabeth Borello, Marieanne Heise, Dolores Drinkwine, Gertrude Dvorak, Susan Maurer
The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day!
This year that falls on May 9th. On that special Sunday we will celebrate our residents who are mothers and all our residents who have nurtured, protected and loved in a motherly manner.
As is customary for Mother’s Day at Mission Oaks Chef Jerry and his staff will be serving a sumptuous lunch fit for a queen. After lunch we will be getting crafty and creating a keepsake perfect for giving or keeping. The afternoon movie is “Raising Arizona” a comedy with Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter.

Welcome Brian Lake, Executive Director
I don’t know what year Brian was born, but with his list of accomplishments, I suspect he is older than his looks imply. I do know where he was born; Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. He lived in 9 states before the age of 5 and calls Wheaton, Illinois home.
Wheaton is about 25 miles west of Chicago where you can find this Irishman’s favorite food; Italian beef. Every Chicagoan knows this warm Italian sandwich roll filled with beef that has been wet-roasted in a broth of garlic, oregano & secret spices and then topped with sweet peppers or spicy hot giardinera. To get a taste of home Brian has been known to drive to a place in Tampa named “Portillo’s Italian Beef”.
Brian followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Air Force, serving our country for 4 years. Brian has always served his fellow man in the healthcare field. Brian was a fireman, an EMT, and for the past 5 years has worked for hospice where he has helped families through difficult times.
Brian apparently likes to raise things—like blue & gold macaws and horses. Not to mention raising 5 grown daughters and one grown son! Brian lives in Eustis with his wife, Kristi, their French bulldog, Luna, and the boss of the crew, their chihuahua, Lexi.
I have witnessed his kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor and know we are blessed to have Brian at the helm as our executive director at Mission Oaks. When you see Brian be sure to return his welcoming smile with one of your own.
